Akiyoshi Sugino Memorial Scholarship
We are pleased to announce the Akiyoshi Sugino Memorial scholarship awards at the 2024 Aloha Ball competition. Like last year, cash awards will be presented to the top three Adult Amateur competitors in the Pre-Novice American Smooth division.
Sensei Sugino laid the seeds of ballroom dance for many of Hawaii’s top amateur dancers. He was a Blackpool finalist and moved to Hawaii in the 1970s. He taught ballroom dance on the islands for almost 50 years. Mr. Sugino was instrumental in creating several of the amateur ballroom dance clubs in Hawaii including IBDI, Pan Pacific and Hawaii Gardenia Circle. He retired from teaching in 2020. He passed away in September 2022 at the age of 80.
Mr. Akiyoshi Sugino was very interested in bringing ballroom dance to the next generation of dancers in Hawaii. In his honor, this year, we will present 1st , 2nd and 3rd place awards in the pre-Novice Adult Amateur Smooth division. This award was established in memory of Mr. Akiyoshi Sugino by Ravi Narayan and Synthia Sumukti.
